The Little Red Hen Community Garden was established in 2012 and has become one of West River’s hidden treasures. Neighbors meet during the gardening season most Saturday’s from spring well into the fall to tend to their garden bed or sharing in the care of one of the many community beds. The Little Red Hen provides the option of having fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in the West River neighborhood.
Join WRNSC Saturday from spring until late fall for the Community Clean-ups. Neighborhood volunteers join with civic, non-profits, faith based, student groups to clean, repair, and plant trees and flowers to improve public spaces and busy streets. Cleaning up your community shows that residents care about its appearance. Crime is less likely to occur when a neighborhood is clean, well-lighted, and used frequently by residents and a network of friends, volunteers, business owners and the faith community.
One of the most effective ways to get to know your neighbors and the kids that live in your neighborhood is to enjoy a meal and a laugh together. Each month the Community Resilience Team hosts an afternoon of games and lunch. The Community Resilience Team consists of residents who are committed to addessing issues around gun violence and building a safer community.
The West River Neighborhood Services Corporation prides itself on its community driven activities designed to ensure the peace, health and safety of its residents. Day of Peace
The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. New Haven was designated as a Peace Messenger City in 1985. The Peace Garden at West River was established in 2000, and is one of only a few places in the world where the United Nations emblem is displayed on land not owned and controlled by the UN.
WRNSC hosts a holiday party for the West River community. It is an afternoon for the West River community to come together with our neighbors, community partners and local organizations, to provide a hot lunch and a toy for every child. The event is filled with the laughter of children as they make holiday cards, sing Christmas carols, decorate cookies and play games. This annual event to open to all this year will be nodifferent. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to celebrate with the friendly faces of the West River and its surrounding communities.
